Right now, Ferry keeps throwing his line into the same pond hoping, apparently, for a different result.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30300136.post-88495127544654410402008-02-20T09:32:00.000-05:002008-02-20T09:32:00.000-05:00I don't blame Ferry for not wanting to part with h...I don't blame Ferry for not wanting to part with his first-rounders after having no first-rounders in two of the first three years on the job.

As far as the players he is purportedly not willing to trade, yes, he's probably not willing to trade Z, and since Gibson is the lone consistent outside shooter on the team and LeBron's "little brother," probably not him either.

But Gooden was the centerpiece of the Cavs' offers each time Ferry went after Bibby, and as far as Ferry not wanting to trade Hughes? I seriously find that hard to believe.

I know a lot of fans are growing extremely impatient with the lack of activity, and they just want Ferry to make something happen already. But the makeup of the team -- the lack of a surplus of young, tradeable players, the lack of expiring contracts, the recent lack of draft picks -- just makes it impossible.

If you go fishing and the fish aren't biting, does that make you a lousy fisherman, or are the fish simply not biting? As the old saying goes, it takes two to tango. From everything I've read, Ferry is trying to tango, but he isn't finding a willing partner because he has nothing to offer other teams. That's why I can't understand the widespread argument that Ferry is just an ineffectual GM who can't make anything happen.

Give him something to work with, maybe the story is different. That's why I'd like to see at least the summer pass before people brand Ferry a bump on a log.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30300136.post-17987289569995107312008-02-20T07:57:00.000-05:002008-02-20T07:57:00.000-05:00Erik: I'm not anti Danny Ferry, but it's been thr...Erik: I'm not anti Danny Ferry, but it's been three years. At some point he has to find a way to turn those phone calls into something tangible. I hear all the time that we don't have anything other teams want. Didn't we go to the NBA Finals last year? What's more accurate is that Ferry isn't willig to give up what other teams might want: Z, Gooden, Gibson, even Hughes. I'm not saying any of them should be traded necessarily, but as long as Ferry continues to treat the first 6 or 7 players on the roster plus his number one picks as untouchable a deal will never get done. And the only reason a deal needs to get done is that this team as presently constructed can't win a NBA title.Gary Benzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10578834252235902676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30300136.post-14489582658084446922008-02-19T20:29:00.000-05:002008-02-19T20:29:00.000-05:00Gary:Great column. But I just have to say a few things.

From everything I've read from Brian Windhorst and other credible sources, Ferry has been anything but inactive or risk-adverse. He's been burning up the phone lines for over a year trying to make something happen.

He tried three separate times to land Mike Bibby, trying on at least one of the occasions to get a third team involved. He tried to put together a package for Garnett. He inquired with the Suns about both Stoudemire and Marion.

If Ferry doesn't make a move, it's not for lack of trying. He just doesn't have anything to trade that other teams want right now. I know that excuse doesn't fly with a lot of fans, but it's simply the truth. That will likely change in five or six months when he has some large expiring contracts to work with, but not now.

Ferry can be called a lot of things. But I don't think it's fair to call Ferry status-quo addicted or risk-adverse until he's been given a chance to perform with some legitimate ammo. As much heat as Ferry has taken, I think he still at least deserves a shot to make some moves this summer with expiring contracts before we cast him as Nero playing a fiddle while LeBron plans his escape to New York.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
